Course description
The Munich Pass is an additional aid from the City of Munich and offers a wide range of discounts at city and non-city facilities (e.g. MVV, museums, sports facilities, swimming pools, cinemas, theatres, zoos, etc.).
Important information for students and trainees
You can receive the München-Pass if you fulfil and prove the requirements listed below. If you are applying for the Munich Pass because of a low income, please remember to enclose your full proof of income with your application! It is not necessary to submit a certificate of enrolment or a training contract.

Important note
If you already have a Munich Pass, you can have it renewed up to four times directly at your Sozialbürgerhaus or by post. If an extension is no longer possible, you can apply for a new Munich Pass online.
Required documents
- valid ID (copy of ID if applying by post)
- Notification of benefits according to SGB II or benefits according to SGB XII or
- Notification from the Office for Housing and Migration or
- Notification from the child benefit fund or
- Proof of income, assets and rent or
- Proof of participation in the Federal Voluntary Service or
- Proof of participation in the Voluntary Social or Ecological Year.
Questions & Answers
The following Munich residents are eligible for the Munich Pass:
- Recipients of ongoing income support or basic income support (SGB XII),
- Recipients of basic income support (SGB II),
- Recipients of benefits under the Asylum Seekers’ Benefits Act (AsylbLG),
- Participants in the Voluntary Social or Ecological Year, volunteers within the framework of the Federal Voluntary Service,
- People with a monthly net income below the Munich income threshold applicable to them for additional assistance. Since 1 January 2025, this has also included students and apprentices.
The current Munich income threshold is: - Single-person household: 1,900 euros
- each additional person aged 14 or over: 950 euros
- each additional person up to and including the age of 13: 570 euros
This results in the following examples of net household income:
- Single-person household: 1,900 euros
- Two-person household: 2,850 euros
- Family with 1 child up to the age of 13: 3,420 euros
- Family with one child aged 14 or over: 3,800 euros
Monthly net income includes, for example: salaries/wages/remuneration, training allowances, wage replacement benefits, pensions, additional income (such as from a ‘minijob’), income from self-employment, child benefit, maintenance payments, income from letting or leasing property, and so on.
Furthermore, the limit on the assets to be taken into account under SGB XII mustnot be exceeded. This is:
- 10,000 euros for each adult
- €500 for each child
Unfortunately, au pairs are not eligible for a München Pass
The current Munich Passes, which are issued without a photo, can only be used in conjunction with a valid photo ID. This also applies to children aged 16 and over.
No, except for participants in the Federal Voluntary Service, the Voluntary Social Year or the Voluntary Ecological Year. In these cases, it is sufficient that you carry out your service in Munich and stay overnight in Munich whilst doing so.
The S monthly pass is available at any MVV sales point (including ticket machines). Day tickets can be purchased at any of the twelve social services centres and at the Office for Housing and Migration.

- and various other facilities

You absolutely must have the München-Pass to use public transport at a reduced rate (S monthly ticket or discounted day tickets).
If it has expired, please go immediately to your
- relevant Social Services Centre or
- relevant Housing and Migration Office
and have your yellow or grey München-Pass renewed there.
