Basic income support in old age and in the event of reduced earning capacity
Persons in need who have permanently left the labour market due to old age or permanent full reduction in earning capacity can apply for basic income support.
Description
Basic income support in old age and in the event of reduced earning capacity is a special form of social assistance.
However, the scope of benefits basically corresponds to that of assistance for living expenses and includes in particular
- the relevant standard requirement and reasonable costs for accommodation and heating
- any additional needs supplements for certain circumstances
- additional statutory requirements (e.g. one-off requirements)
Special features
- application-dependent benefit
- as a rule, no recourse to maintenance payments from children or parents
- Benefits start from the first of the month in which the application is submitted
Special contact points
- Deaf Munich residents should contact the Social Service for the Deaf.
- Munich residents without their own home should contact the Central Assistance Centre for the Homeless.
Prerequisites
Persons who have permanently retired from working life due to old age or permanent full reduction in earning capacity and are unable to support themselves from their own income and assets:
- Persons who have reached the relevant age limit (65 years of age or the age limit raised in stages from the 1947 birth cohort up to the age of 67).
- Persons who have reached the age of 18 and, irrespective of the respective labour market situation, are permanently fully incapacitated for work within the meaning of statutory pension insurance.
Persons who have reached the age of 18 are also entitled to benefits for the period in which they are undergoing the entry procedure and the vocational training programme in a workshop for disabled people or are working in the work area.

Please complete the form/appendix "Other persons in my/our home" if you do not live alone.
Please also complete the form/appendix "Dependants" if you have dependants (i.e. parents, adult children and spouses - including those who are separated or divorced) who do not live with you in your household.
Please sign the application forms (basic application part 1 and part 2), as well as the forms "Other persons in my/our home" and "Dependents" and submit them in paper form to your local Sozialbürgerhaus.
Homeless Munich residents should contact the "Zentrale Wohnungslosenhilfe" (Centralised Assistance for the Homeless) at the Office for Housing and Migration. It is responsible for the entire city area.
Questions & Answers
Full reduction in earning capacity within the meaning of the statutory pension insurance exists if the earning capacity is less than three hours a day for an unforeseeable period of time due to illness or disability under the general conditions of the labour market.
There is no recourse to children and parents as long as they do not reach a total annual income of more than 100,000 euros.
