Happy City Index 2026: Munich is Germany's happiest city

The Happy City Index examines which city is home to the happiest people. Compared with 251 cities worldwide Munich secures an outstanding position in the top 10.

Munich stays in the top

Since happiness is a highly subjective feeling, the goal of the Happy City Index is to identify and evaluate urban solutions and conditions that help citizens lead fulfilling lives.

Munich remains one of the world’s most livable cities in 2026. In the overall ranking, Munich once again takes ninth place, making it the highest-ranked major German city. Copenhagen, Helsinki, and Geneva occupy the top spots. Three further German cities appear in the ranking: Stuttgart (24th place), Bremen (27th place), and Berlin (36th place). The index classifies Munich as one of the “Gold Cities”. This category includes cities which consistently receive positive ratings across all categories examined.

A leading location for business and innovation

Munich stands out as a strong location for business and innovation. A high per capital gross domestic product, significantly higher purchasing power compared to the national average, and low (youth) unemployment are just some of the factors that highlight Munich's strong economic standing. Looking at the number of patents filed per 100,000 residents, the study certifies Munich's active collaboration between universities, industry, and research institutions. This innovation-friendly environment in the Bavarian capital leads the index to rate the potential of the city's urban innovation ecosystem as very high.

Munich is also strongly positioned in the area of knowledge and education: for example, access to education, high educational standards, and a well-educated population contribute to the positive rating. The index particularly highlights the high proportion of university graduates and the city’s world-class universities.

Furthermore, the topics of environment and sustainability enhance Munich’s appeal: good environmental policies, numerous green spaces and parks, as well as a comprehensive public transport system and a high proportion of “green mobility” add up to please Munich citizens. In addition, high-quality medical care, a citizen-friendly administration, and the extensive cultural offerings also have a positive impact on the daily lives of people in Munich.

However, the issue of affordable housing has a negative impact on Munich’s ranking within the index: high rent prices have an unfortunate effect on the cost of living. Nevertheless, it can be summarized that Munich offers residents a high quality of life and favorable circumstances for happiness.

About the Happy City Index

The Happy City Index was published for the sixth time in 2026 by the Institute for Quality of Life and is based on a complex system of indicators. The index particularly highlights cities that combine quality of life, sustainability, and long-term urban development strategies.

For this purpose, 64 indicators were evaluated for 251 cities; according to the study, these indicators influence the daily lives of their residents and contribute to happiness in the broadest sense. They can be classified into six categories: citizens, governance, environment, economy, health, and mobility. Each indicator contributes to the total score according to the weighting assigned to them in the methodology..
