Burial in the hedge gardens

The "Heckengärten" at the Perlacher Forst cemetery is the first maintenance-free communal burial ground where coffins and urns can be buried together.

Course description

In the hedge gardens at the cemetery in Perlacher Forst, the hedges – which are characteristic of the cemetery – define its appearance. The layout was created in a sparsely occupied burial ground in Perlacher Forst, where very linear hedge structures subdivided the burial ground.

The hedge gardens have partially broken up this structure. In the small open spaces created as a result, adjacent graves have been grouped together to form a communal burial area for coffins.

What makes the hedge gardens special is that, for the first time, coffins and urns can be buried together. Until now, communal burial plots had only been available for urns.

The hedge gardens consist of a perennial bed with a name stone for each grave, which also serves as a resting surface. Decorative stelae and rock pears further structure the layout. The memorial slabs and stelae are made of Wachenzeller dolomite. The nameplates consist of six brass plates that are securely bolted to a stainless steel frame.
