Tree felling - protected landscape areas

If you want to cut down a tree or make other changes to a tree in a landscape conservation area, you must submit an application.

Description

You must apply to the Department of Climate and Environmental Protection for tree felling and changes to trees and shrubs in protected landscape areas and protected landscape features.

Outside of protected areas, the Department of Urban Planning and Building Regulations is responsible. You can find more information on this under Tree felling - Protected tree species.

Prerequisites

In the protected areas, you must submit an application for all tree species. The restrictions of the Tree Protection Ordinance(for example: only trees, only from a trunk circumference of 80 cm at a height of one metre, only living woody plants, no fruit trees) do not apply in the protected areas.

Any affected person can submit an application. The applicants are also responsible for the costs.

If there is an acute danger (e.g. a crack in the ground, lifting of the root plate, sudden inclination), the necessary measures to avert danger can be taken without prior written authorisation from the Lower Nature Conservation Authority. In this case, please submit written confirmation from a specialised company within two weeks of carrying out the measure. The confirmation should provide evidence of the acute danger, contain informative images and state when the measure was carried out.

Required documents

For a successful application, you will need the completed PDF file. Photo documentation of the damage to the trees and shrubs can make processing easier. The same applies to existing expert reports.

Duration & Costs

Processing time

Processing takes two to three months, depending on the volume of applications.

Fees

The costs for the service range from 50 to 5,000 euros. The amount of the fees depends on the number of trees and shrubs or the expert reports to be completed by the expert and whether a site inspection was necessary. An invoice is enclosed with the decision. The payment modalities are also noted there.
