Emergency assistance in the absence of a residence permit - students, university graduates, self-employed persons
Are you a student or looking for a job after graduation, do you not have a valid residence permit and do you need help because of an emergency?
Description
Only verified emergencies will be dealt with.
What is an emergency? An emergency is an unforeseeable situation in which a document is required immediately, as failure to provide it would result in damage.
This applies in the following cases:
- Imminent loss of employment or a job offer
- Imminent loss of benefits (e.g. student loan)
- Urgent travel for personal or professional reasons within the next seven days (e.g. business trip, illness, bereavement)
The Service Centre for Immigration and Naturalisation will assess and decide whether an emergency exists.
Please do not come without an appointment ! We do not issue appointments or give out queue numbers on the spot. Emergency appointments are only available at short notice for the same day. Appointments are made available daily on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 6.30 am and on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7.30 am. If you are unable to book an appointment online, please call our helpline to arrange one.
Beware of services that charge a fee: We expressly warn you against offers of appointments from other providers that charge a fee. Booking an appointment at the Service Centre for Immigration and Naturalisation is always free of charge. Please use only this website to ensure that you receive the service free of charge and reliably. Please let us know if you come across a chargeable appointment.
Asylum procedures
Are you currently undergoing or have you completed an asylum procedure, have you been granted asylum, are you a refugee or have you been granted subsidiary protection?
In emergencies, you can visit the Service Point at Ruppertstraße 19 (Entrance A) in Area 21 on the 2nd floor without an appointment:
Monday: 7.30 am – 12 noon
Tuesday: 8.30 am – 12 noon and 2 pm – 6 pm
Thursday: 8.30 am – 3 pm
Friday: 7.30 am – 12 noon
Requirements
You belong to the following groups of people and have a foreign nationality:
- Students
- Scientists
- Researchers
- Highly qualified (you have a university degree and are working)
- Self-employed persons
- Family members of the above-mentioned groups of people
Please note:
Other requirements apply to all other groups of people.
Required documents
- Confirmation from the employer regarding imminent job loss or a necessary business trip
- Confirmation from the benefits provider regarding the imminent loss of benefits
- Confirmation of booked travel, hotel or transport
- Confirmation from a public authority, hospital or doctor regarding an urgent personal need to travel
Please note: If all the necessary documents are provided, we will endeavour to complete the processing on the same day where possible. To this end, please bring a digital passport-sized photograph and all current, relevant documents with you to the emergency appointment:

No. You can make an appointment to extend your residence permit if you send us your application for extension via our online services or by post.
No. No other services (e.g. change of job or the issue/renewal of a residence permit) are processed at the emergency counter. This is only possible via our online services or by post.
