Set up city terrace

Anyone wishing to set up a city terrace (tables and seating) on public land requires a special use permit.

Description

City terraces are non-commercial, limited conversions of pavements and squares with tables and seating.

The authorisation is a permanent permit that remains valid until revoked or waived. The installation of the city terrace is authorised annually from April to October at the most.

City terraces serve to relieve the pressure on heavily frequented areas and are therefore not permitted in the area of the Old Town pedestrian zone bylaws.

Prerequisites

  • No commercial use
  • Permitted use: Seating and tables for everyone
  • The set-ups must be weatherproof outdoor furniture

Questions & Answers

Yes, city terraces are approved because they are intended to bring added value to the neighbourhood and to everyone there. They are not private terraces.

Furniture that is to remain on the city terrace area for the entire authorisation period must be specified when the application is submitted. Provided the area marked as a city terrace is large enough, anyone may temporarily set up a folding chair or similar seating or tables there, for example. These do not have to be weatherproof, but must be removed again immediately after use. It is not possible to set up additional furniture for several days thereafter and a new application is required.

No, the City Terrace may not be used for commercial purposes.
