Studying after an au pair stay or voluntary social year

Under certain conditions, it is possible to switch to a study visit after an au pair stay.

(Does not apply to EU citizens and nationals of Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway)

Please apply in good time, i.e. while your au pair residence permit is still valid, for your residence permit for the purpose of

  • the preparatory language course,
  • the preparatory college,
  • the study programme

Note
At the end of your au pair placement, you must move out of your au pair family's home. Due to the difficult housing situation in Munich, you usually have one year to do this.

You will need the following documents to apply for a study visit:

  • fully completed application form
  • valid passport

  • an informal confirmation of the date of termination of the au pair relationship,
  • Proof of sufficient health insurance cover,
  • Proof of secured financing* for at least 1 year (declaration of commitment according to § 68 AufenthG or blocked account with a deposit of currently 7,908 euros),
  • German course registration for at least 20 hours per week or letter of admission from a German university,
  • Proof of university entrance qualification (issued by the university), or
  • the APS certificate (for au pairs from China, Mongolia and Vietnam),

Financing
Funding is guaranteed if monthly funds to cover living expenses are available in the amount of at least the BAföG rate (currently 659 euros). Additional earnings from authorised employment can be taken into account.

This list is not exhaustive. Additional evidence may be required in individual cases.
