Questions & Answers

In the case of partnerships (e.g. BGB companies, OHG, KG), the partners authorised to manage the business must register as traders.

In the case of legal entities (e.g. GmbH, AG), the legal representatives (e.g. managing director of a GmbH) are obliged to register.

When changing the legal form, it is usually necessary to deregister the old business and register a new business with the new legal form. In most cases, re-registering a business is not sufficient.

In the event of a business merger, the existing business must be deregistered and the newly created company registered.

No, re-registration can also be carried out by an authorised representative. An informal power of attorney with identification of the person granting the power of attorney and the authorised representative is sufficient. In the case of online re-registration, the power of attorney is uploaded during the registration process.

It is generally possible to visit the Trade Licensing Office in person after making an appointment.

we recommend that you use the online re-registrationprocess.

  • If you are representing another person, a power of attorney is required.
  • If you are expanding your business to include activities requiring a licence, you must present the corresponding licence or the updated craft card for activities in the full craft sector.
  • Please remember to show your ID/passport when you visit us in person.

If you move within Munich, you must re-register.

However, if you move your business to another city or municipality, from 1 November 2025 you will only need to register in the new city or municipality. This will transfer the data from the business registration to the authorities at the previous location.

Please inform us informally by e-mail of any voluntary but sensible changes, such as a change of managing director, a change in the main or secondary occupation or the partial discontinuation of existing activities.

Yes, you can apply informally for a duplicate.
