Certificate of eligibility

If you wish to stand as a candidate in an election outside Munich and have your main residence in Munich, you must submit an application.

Description

Are you only standing as a candidate in the City of Munich?
If Munich is your main place of residence, you do not need to apply for a certificate of eligibility. The electoral office automatically checks the eligibility of all candidates in Munich, even without an application.

Are you standing for election outside of Munich or throughout Bavaria?
If Munich is your main place of residence, you must apply for a certificate of eligibility here at the electoral office.

Is your main residence in another municipality?
If your main residence is in another municipality, you must apply for your certificate of eligibility there.

Prerequisites

if you want to stand as a candidate, you must fulfil the following requirements on election day, depending on the election:

Bundestag election

  • You have German citizenship,
  • are at least 18 years old and
  • are not excluded from eligibility.

State parliament and district elections

  • You are a German citizen,
  • are at least 18 years old,
  • have lived in Bavaria for at least three months as their main place of residence and
  • are not excluded from eligibility.

Local elections (city council and district committee elections)

  • You are a German citizen or a citizen of another EU member state (EU citizenship),
  • are at least 18 years old,
  • have had their main place of residence in the constituency for at least three months and
  • are not excluded from eligibility.

Local elections (election of the Lord Mayor)

  • You have German citizenship
  • are at least 18 years old, but not older than 67 years on the day they may take office
  • are not excluded from eligibility.

European election

  • You are a German citizen or a citizen of another EU member state (EU citizenship),
  • have lived in Germany for at least three months and
  • are at least 18 years old and are not excluded from eligibility.

Required documents

Send us an informal letter or e-mail with the following details:

  • First name and surname
  • Date of birth
  • Address of your main residence
  • Type of candidature (which mandate, which constituency, which election)

The electoral office will check the application and send you the certificate of eligibility by post.
