Reimbursement of travel costs to and from school
Munich schoolchildren can apply for a cost exemption or reimbursement of travel costs for their journey to school by public transport.
Description
School transport in Bavaria is governed by law.
Entitlement to free travel to school begins from the date the application is submitted, but no earlier than the start of the school year. Once the application has been approved, pupils receive a free €365 travel pass. As a rule, transport is provided via public transport (MVV, MVG).
Have you lost your travel card or chip card? To get a replacement as quickly as possible, log in to the MVG customer portal.
Important note
Please submit your initial application by 30 June at the latest for the coming school year, so that the travel pass is available in time for the start of the school year. Unfortunately, we are unable to process applications received after this date in time.
Requirements
Pupils with their usual place of residence in Munich can apply for a free MVV season ticket under the following conditions:
- Grades 1 - 4: The pupils have a journey to school of more than two kilometres and attend their local school.
- Years 5 - 10: Pupils have a journey to school of more than three kilometres and attend their nearest school.
- From year 11: From year 11 onwards, free travel to school is subject to the so-called social clause. Pupils can only claim free travel to school on the basis of economic and social necessity. Corresponding proof (see under "Questions and answers") must be submitted with the application.
Questions & Answers
We receive a large number of applications, particularly at the start of the school year. We ask for your understanding that, for this reason, processing them may take some time.
For any further enquiries, please email us at schuelerbefoerderung.rbs@muenchen.de.
Please always include your child’s first name, surname, date of birth and the school they attend in your email.
For Years 1 to 10 , no documents are required to apply, provided the above conditions are met.
From Year 11 onwards, pupils remain entitled by law to free travel to school if, in addition to meeting the general eligibility criteria for school travel, one of the following documents is submitted alongside the application:
- Proof of receipt of child benefit under the Federal Child Benefit Act (BKKG) for three or more children (as at August before the start of the school year)
- Proof of receipt of benefits under the Social Code (SGB II, XII or BuT), as at August prior to the start of the school year
- Proof of receipt of benefits under the Asylum Act
Pupils may be entitled to free travel to and from school if they can provide one of the following documents:
- A need for transport due to a recognised disability
- Proof of non-admission or confirmation of overcrowding
- Allocation by the Ministerial Representative
All necessary supporting documents can be submitted via the upload function when making the application.
Travel costs can only be reimbursed if your application for free travel to school has been approved . For the period between the start of your entitlement and the start of the free travel pass, you will be reimbursed 36.50 euros per month. This amount corresponds to the pro rata price of the 365-euro ticket.
If you have purchased a ticket or a season ticket yourself, you can usually cancel it early with MVG once your application has been approved.
Important: If your application is rejected, the cost of any tickets you have purchased yourself will not be refunded. In this case, you will not have the right to cancel your ticket early.
Tip: If you need a ticket before a decision is made on your application, a monthly season ticket that can be cancelled at any time may be a good option. This gives you flexibility when cancelling – regardless of whether your application for free travel to school is approved.
A refund of travel costs for the previous school year is only possible from Year 11 onwards. The application must be submitted by the end of October of the following school year at the latest.
No. You do not need to submit any tickets, as the travel costs incurred will be reimbursed as a lump sum if your application is approved.
Please note: If the application is rejected, the costs will not be reimbursed and there is no right to cancel privately purchased tickets.
You will receive the decision by post. If you agreed in your application that the decision may be sent electronically, you will receive the approval letter by email should your application for free travel to school be approved.
Order the travel card as a smart card using the details from your approval notice via the MVG customer portal. The smart card will then be sent free of charge by post to the address you have provided.
You will also find detailed ordering instructions in various languages on the MVG customer portal.
Since the 2023/2024 school year, the family cost limit has been 320 euros per pupil or 490 euros per family per school year. Any amount exceeding these limits, based on the total eligible transport costs incurred during a school year, will be reimbursed. This is subject to the condition that the pupil attends the nearest state-recognised state school and that the shortest possible journey to school is longer than 3 kilometres.
Please submit a claim for reimbursement and upload the supporting documents. This can be submitted by 31 October at the latest for the previous school year.
