Description
The marriage or civil partnership register contains information about a couple and their marriage or civil partnership. If any of the details entered change or were incorrect from the outset, the register must be updated. The data entered in a marriage or civil partnership certificate is the data that was in the register on the day it was issued.
Examples of possible changes in the marriage or civil partnership register:
- Change of name abroad
- Divorce abroad
- Death of a spouse/partner abroad
Examples of corrections in the marriage or civil partnership register:
- Misspelling by the registry office
- The spelling of the name in the passport differs from that in the marriage or civil partnership register
- Incorrect information was provided when registering the marriage/ civil partnership
Prerequisites
If a procedure is carried out in Germany that results in a change of data in the marriage or civil partnership register, the authorities involved will inform each other. As the person concerned, you do not have to take care of this yourself.
The situation is different if a corresponding change has been made abroad. In this case, you must inform the registry office where the marriage or civil partnership was entered into yourself. Use our contact form to do this.
