Continued operation of old fireplaces and stoves
If you want to put an old fireplace or stove back into operation or continue using it, you must register it.
Course description
In the city of Munich, there are rules governing fireplaces and stoves that heat with wood or other solid materials.
These stoves may only be used if they emit few pollutants and comply with the limit values (see "Munich Fuel Ordinance" or "First Ordinance on the Implementation of the Federal Immission Control Act").
The permitted values are
- Carbon monoxide: maximum 1250 mg/m³
- Dust: maximum 40 mg/m³
Old fireplaces and stoves that were installed before 2015 and are to be used again must be reported to the responsible authority. In the city of Munich, this is the Department for Climate and Environmental Protection.
Required documents
- Completed " Form for the continued operation of an old system"
- Options for proof of compliance with the limit values ( test bench certificate):
- Proof of compliance with the above-mentioned limit values for dust and carbon monoxide or
- Proof of installation of a dust filter and proof of compliance with the above-mentioned limit values for dust and carbon monoxide or
- Proof of installation of a dust filter and proof of a walled-in stove insert within the meaning of Section 4 (5) of the Munich Combustion Protection Ordinance (written confirmation from the authorised district chimney sweep)

Questions & Answers
A test certificate is an official document that confirms that a fireplace or stove fulfils certain legal requirements. What is it used for? It shows that the appliance has been tested on a test bench. It confirms that the fireplace or stove complies with the prescribed emission limits (for particulate matter and carbon monoxide).
