Marriage with a foreign partner

If you want to get married in Munich but do not have a main residence or secondary residence in Munich, you must fulfil certain requirements.

  • Enquire in good time at the registry office in your place of residence about the necessary documents for registering the marriage, which can vary greatly depending on the personal circumstances of the engaged couple.
  • Once you have obtained the documents, register the marriage at the registry office in whose district at least one of you has a place of residence.
  • Ask for a certificate of registration of the marriage. Send this to us with your desired date (also by fax).
  • Ask your local registry office to send us the registration documents. For organisational reasons, we must receive the documents at least two weeks before the planned date.
  • Please use our contact form a few days after your registration documents have been sent. The registry office will contact you to discuss the wedding date, further details and the costs. You will then receive a written confirmation of the date, on which you can also name up to two witnesses (although these are not necessary). Witnesses must generally understand German, be of legal age and be able to identify themselves with a valid identity card or passport.

In addition to the fee for registering the marriage, which you pay at the local registry office, there are also costs for the marriage ceremony in Munich, for example for marriage certificates or musical accompaniment, which you must pay before a binding date is confirmed.
