Requirements

General admission requirements:

  1. Intermediate school-leaving qualification(certificates from private schools not recognised by the state are not sufficient proof of prior education)
  2. You must provide evidence of one of the following vocational qualifications:
  • at least two years’ vocational training in a recognised apprenticeship under the Vocational Training Act or the Crafts and Trades Regulation Act
  • at least two years’ school-based vocational training completed with a state final examination
  • Passed an entry-level examination for a career in the middle or higher non-technical or technical civil service, or a junior civil service examination for the middle technical civil service
  • At least five years’ professional experience

Final admission is subject to successful completion of the probationary period. During the probationary period, it is assessed whether the student is able to meet the requirements of the vocational upper secondary school.

Preparatory course/preparatory class:

Those who have specific educational gaps on entry can take advantage of special support measures before joining the vocational upper secondary school:

  • Preparatory course: recommended for graduates of the Realschule or the Wirtschaftsschule. The one-year preparatory course helps pupils refresh the knowledge they acquired in German, English and mathematics as part of their intermediate school-leaving qualification (also available as a half-year course).
  • Preparatory Class: Intensive tuition in German, English and mathematics, along with the basics of other subjects, for graduates of the Mittelschule or Wirtschaftsschule who have completed vocational training. Pupils without a secondary school leaving certificate must sit an aptitude test in German, English and mathematics. This involves taking part in one 90-minute lesson each in German, English and mathematics, which are set and conducted by the host school. In each lesson, pupils sit a written examination set centrally by the State Ministry. The average mark across the three examinations must not be lower than 4 points (satisfactory).
