Studying after an au pair stay or voluntary social year
Under certain conditions, it is possible to switch to a study visit after an au pair stay.
(Does not apply to EU citizens and nationals of Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway)
Please apply in good time, i.e. while your au pair residence permit is still valid, for your residence permit for the purpose of
- the preparatory language course,
- the preparatory college,
- the study programme
Note
At the end of your au pair placement, you must move out of your au pair family's home. Due to the difficult housing situation in Munich, you usually have one year to do this.
Required documents
You will need the following documents to apply for a study visit:
- fully completed application form
- valid passport
- a current biometric passport photo (photo booths are available at the Foreigners Office)
- an informal confirmation of the date of termination of the au pair relationship,
- Proof of sufficient health insurance cover,
- Proof of secured financing* for at least 1 year (declaration of commitment according to § 68 AufenthG or blocked account with a deposit of currently 7,908 euros),
- German course registration for at least 20 hours per week or letter of admission from a German university,
- Proof of university entrance qualification (issued by the university), or
- the APS certificate (for au pairs from China, Mongolia and Vietnam),
Financing
Funding is guaranteed if monthly funds to cover living expenses are available in the amount of at least the BAföG rate (currently 659 euros). Additional earnings from authorised employment can be taken into account.

You are permitted to work for 120 days or 240 half-days per calendar year during your preparatory studies . In the first year, employment is only permitted during the holidays.
You have a maximum of two years to prepare for your studies following your au pair stay. Please note: German courses, the preparatory college or the pre-study internship are part of the preparation for your studies, after which you must start your degree programme, so please pay particular attention to the admission requirements and the application deadlines for the degree programme.
Employment during the degree programme
During your degree programme, you are permitted to work 120days or 240 half days per calendar year as well as additional part-time student employment at universities/public academic institutions. Any further employment may only be permitted in special exceptional cases. As a general rule, employment must not interfere with your studies.
