Locking periods

The statutory closing time applies to all restaurants. In individual cases, the district administration department may authorise a different regulation.

Description

The legal closing time is from 5 am to 6 am.

Closing times for amusement arcades are from 3 am to 9 am.

Special regulations for the Munich city area:
On the nights of the last four days of carnival, i.e. from Friday to Saturday, Saturday to Sunday, Sunday to Shrove Monday and Shrove Monday to Shrove Tuesday, the closing time is generally lifted.

Open-air catering in the city of Munich:
Open-air catering areas (catering areas on public thoroughfares) have been allowed to be open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. since 2001. On 8 October 2002, the Munich City Council extended these operating hours to outdoor catering areas on private property. This means that since then, commercial gardens, terraces, front gardens and beer gardens may also be open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., provided that the actual catering business is also open until at least 11 p.m. Businesses that only have the "statutory shop opening hours" or operating hours from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. do not benefit from this regulation.
The operation of outdoor bar areas and street-side outdoor catering on private property is generally permitted until midnight on Fridays, Saturdays and days before public holidays in the months of April, May, June, July, August and September, provided this does not conflict with building regulations.
However, this does not apply to inner courtyards.
If the outdoor catering area begins on private property on the street and continues to the rear (next to the building), this is not automatically included. These areas require a case-by-case decision based on the specific residential and noise situation on site.

Legal basis

The closing time regulation is based on § 18 GastG in conjunction with § 8 GastV.
