Registering a vehicle imported from abroad
To register motor vehicles and trailers imported from abroad here or to obtain a day registration, you must contact the registration authority.
Description
new vehicles without registration certificate part II and used vehicles from abroad that do not have EU-harmonised vehicle documents must be identified. Vehicles from non-EU countries must always be identified before registration.
To register a vehicle imported from abroad, you must visit us at the registration office.
You need an appointment for this.
Prerequisites
- You are registered as having your main residence in Munich.
- For legal entities, commercial enterprises, traders: Munich is the place of business (head office or branch office)
Required documents
- In the case of a vehicle from an EU member state that is less than 6 months old or has a maximum mileage of 6000 km, the completed form for notification for VAT purposes must also be submitted. Please give this form to your representatives if you are not coming in person.
- Identity card or passport
- When presenting an ID card/passport without the signature of the holder, it is also possible to present a combination of a copy of the ID card and a copy of the driving licence instead of the original ID card if the driving licence contains a photograph and a signature and you are registered in Munich.
- For legal entities, companies and associations:
Extract from the commercial or association register (not older than 3 years from issue) and business registration - For minors:
Declaration of consent from the legal guardian. If only one parent has parental authority, this must be proven by a custody order or a court judgement. - In the case of guardianship for "official and administrative matters": Carer's identity card
- For proxies: written power of attorney (original) as well as ID of the authorised representative (original) and ID of the principal (copy).
- SEPA mandate of the vehicle owner/account holder (for purely electrically powered vehicles only required from 10 years of age)
- eVB (electronic insurance confirmation)
- Test report on a valid main inspection from a German test centre or from the country of origin (if required)
- For commercial vehicles: safety inspection
- Purchase contract or original invoice
- Full report § 21 StVZO for vehicles without EC type approval

For vehicles purchased in other EU countries that are less than 6 months old or have a maximum mileage of 6,000 km, a notification of intra-Community acquisition is required for VAT purposes.

Proof of customs clearance

Full certificate (§21 StVZO) or COC from the manufacturer in conjunction with a new general inspection in accordance with §29 StVZO
- Identification can be carried out at our premises, by another German vehicle registration authority, by officially recognised experts, by vehicle traffic inspectors or by test engineers from an officially recognised inspection organisation.
- Identification may be waived if the vehicle has successfully completed a main inspection in accordance with § 29 StVZO, an expert report in accordance with § 21 StVZO or an assessment in accordance with § 13 EG-FGV.
Only test reports from EU countries can be recognised for vehicles with an EC type approval . The foreign main inspectionmust be presented in the original (with a translation if necessary) and contain the following information:

Name of the test organisation or test centre and signature or identity of the tester (e.g. stamp with tester number)
Upon application, the first registration of a brand-new vehicle imported from abroad can also be carried out for the duration of one day only. A day registration does not require the licence plates to be stamped.
