Short-term licence plates with foreign vehicle documents

Short-term licence plates are national licence plates that are only permitted for test and transfer journeys within Germany. They are valid for a maximum of 6 days.

Description

In Munich, you can only obtain a short-term licence plate at the registration authority in Eichstätter Straße.

Vehicles without a valid main inspection or safety inspection may only be driven to an inspection centre in the district of the registration authority responsible for the location of the vehicle or in a neighbouring district.

Prerequisites

You can apply for the short-term licence plate either at the registration authority in the place where

  • You have your main place of residence or
  • where the vehicle is currently located. You will need either a confirmation from the vehicle dealer or a purchase contract as proof.

The test report from the last valid general inspection must be submitted in the original, if available. The vehicle must be deregistered (taken out of service).

Required documents

All documents must be presented in the original.

  • Identity card
  • Power of attorney of the applicant; for non-EU nationals, a person authorised to receive the application must also be named. If such an authorisation is submitted, a copy of the applicant's identity card is sufficient for persons registered in Munich.

It is only possible to continue driving throughout Germany if you have passed the main inspection.

Vehicles without an EC operating licence or individual operating licence may only be driven with a short-term licence plate if they are directly related to obtaining a new operating licence. These journeys may only be made in the registration district or neighbouring registration district that is responsible for the location of the vehicle.

you can drive with a short-term licence plate for a maximum of six days from the day of registration. After that, it automatically loses its validity.
