International driving licence (EU card driving licence)

You need an international driving licence for many countries outside the European Union.

Description

There are two types of international driving licence:

  • The International Driving Licence according to Annex 8d to the Driving Licence Ordinance (FeV) is valid for the contracting states according to the Vienna Convention of 8.11.1968 on Road Traffic and is valid for 3 years after issue.
  • The International Driving Licence in accordance with Annex 8c to the Driving Licence Ordinance (FeV) is valid for the contracting states under the International Convention on Motor Traffic (Paris Convention) of 24.4.1926 on Road Traffic and is valid for 1 year after issue.

These licences are only valid in the contracting states of the respective agreement.

The foreign representations of the countries or automobile clubs can provide information on this.

Since 1 September 2002, you have needed a German EU driving licence in order to apply for an international driving licence.

If you do not yet have a German EU driving licence, you must apply for one before an international driving licence is issued. You should apply for an exchange licence at least four weeks before your planned stay abroad. You can only have your international driving licence issued once you have exchanged it for an EU driving licence.

You can find more information here.

If you already have an EU driving licence, you can submit the application online or in person; you can also authorise another person (with a written power of attorney and your ID/passport). The authorised person must also be able to identify themselves.

Prerequisites

  • You are registered as having your main residence in Munich.
