Vehicle transfer - from outside to Munich

If you are the owner of a vehicle registered in another location or you are moving to Munich with your vehicle, you must transfer your vehicle.

Description

If you move, you must re-register as soon as possible. The law stipulates 14 days.

If you register your new place of residence at one of the citizens' offices, you can also have your vehicle documents corrected at the same time.

If you have already re-registered your residential address but not your vehicle documents, you can do this from the comfort of your own home using your online ID card function.

If you no longer have your PIN for your online ID function, you can have a new PIN issued at any Citizens Office or apply for one online.

if you move within Munich, you do not need to re-register your vehicle, but you do need to have the change of address entered in the registration certificate part I (vehicle registration document).
To re-register the vehicle in person on site, you need an appointment.

Prerequisites

  • You are registered as having your main residence in Munich.
  • For legal entities, commercial enterprises, traders:
Munich is the place of business (head office or branch)

It does not matter whether you are moving within Munich or moving to Munich. If you have an ID card in cheque card format and an electronic residence permit, the new address must be updated on the ID card chip.

If you move to another registration area, you are obliged to have your vehicle re-registered immediately . The law stipulates 14 days.
You can re-register your vehicle online, in person on site (only possible with an appointment ) or together with the registration of your place of residence.

If the stay in the other city lasts a maximum of three months, the vehicle does not have to be re-registered. However, it is necessary to inform your own registration authority (where the vehicle was registered) about the temporary change of residence.

When we have finished preparing your registration application, you can buy the licence plates next. There are several private providers in the vicinity of the registration office and the citizens' offices. You will have to pay the price for the licence plates separately. These costs are not included in the fees. You must present the registration application to the manufacturer as proof of your authorisation.
You must then come back to us so that we can affix the official stickers to the licence plates and stamp them.

If you move from another registration district to the city of Munich, you may keep the licence plate number when you change your registration if the vehicle is registered at the time of the move. In this case, you do not have to bring the licence plates with you. If this is not the case, the licence plates must be presented. After the vehicle has been taken out of service, the licence plate will be returned to the former competent registration authority.

Keeping the licence plate number on purchase: If you wish to keep the previous licence plate number of the last vehicle owner, the vehicle must still be registered. You do not have to bring the licence plates with you. If the vehicle has already been taken out of service at the time of the transfer, the previous licence plate cannot be transferred. If you want new licence plates and the vehicle is still registered, the licence plates must be presented. Once the vehicle has been taken out of service, the licence plate will be returned to the former registration authority.

Vehicle registration authority Eichstätter Str. 2:

  • Vehicle registration services and dealers only receive their service directly from the vehicle registration authority (not in the citizens' offices)
  • leased / financed vehicles whose ZBII (vehicle registration document) is held by the bank can also only be processed directly at the vehicle registration authority (you must request the vehicle registration document from your bank and have it sent to the vehicle registration authority)
  • Vehicles with an operating licence (e.g. vehicles and trailers without registration certificate part 2 / vehicle registration document) can only be re-registered at the vehicle registration authority

Any Citizens Office in Munich
You can have your new address entered in your vehicle documents at the same time as you register your place of residence.

Online registration authority
You can re-register your vehicle in Munich around the clock from the comfort of your own home. You will be guided through the online process step by step. Everything you need and where to find it is explained. To complete the process successfully ("drive off immediately"), you will need to download and print out some documents (provisional registration certificate, registration certificate) depending on the registration / re-registration application. You can only drive off immediately (without stamp stickers) if you display the provisional registration certificate visibly on the outside of the vehicle. Don't worry if everything doesn't run smoothly. The registration office will contact you in the event of any queries or discrepancies. So please keep your contact details up to date.

As the City of Munich does not have enough licence plate combinations available for all vehicles, cars without the suffix "E" (electric) or "H" (historic) or with a seasonal period may only be registered on normal licence plate sizes (M + 2 letters and 4 numbers, MUC + 1 letter and 4 numbers or MUC + 2 letters and 3 numbers). The licence plate reservation must be made by the future holder or entered in the licence plate reservation.
A licence plate reservation is only accepted with identical holder data.
