Register a brand new vehicle or one-day registration

Vehicles (including trailers) must be registered and have an official licence plate in order to be allowed to drive on the road. Many things can now be done online.

Description

You can use your online ID card function to register your vehicle online from the comfort of your own home.

If you no longer have your PIN for your online ID function, you can have a new PIN issued at any Citizens Office or apply for one online.

Important for the registration of a motorbike:

Please read the section "Important information for registering a motorbike online" beforehand.

  • up-to-date browser, for example Chrome, Firefox, Safari or Edge
  • ID card with online function
  • ID card app 2 (available in every app store)
  • electronic residence permit (eAT) with activated online ID function and pin (if you need help with activation, please contact the office responsible for the eAT)

If a modification has already been made to your new vehicle or you have an additional certificate for the registration of your new vehicle, you must book an appointment and submit your registration application on site. Please read the section "Requirements and necessary documents for the local registration office".

Duration & Costs

Processing time

The online application usually only takes a few minutes. After payment, you will receive documents for immediate download. You must download these.

To be able to drive off immediately, you must print out the temporary registration certificate and place it behind your windscreen so that it is clearly legible. This is valid for 10 days from the date of the online registration application. In this case, you will receive your documents (ZBI, ZBII, stamp stickers) within the next 10 days.

If it is not possible to "drive off immediately", you will receive your documents within the next 3 days.

Please make sure that your contact details are correct. If there are any discrepancies or queries, the registration office will contact you in any case.

Questions & Answers

Requirements on site:

    • You are registered as having your main residence in Munich.
    • For legal entities, commercial enterprises, tradespeople: Munich is the place of business (head office or branch office)
    • You already have German vehicle documents for the vehicle. If not, you must observe the information on registering a foreign vehicle.

    documents required on site:

    • Do you have a foreign passport without a signature? Then you can present a copy of the passport and a copy of the driving licence. The driving licence must contain a photo and a signature and you must be registered in Munich.
    • Identity card or passport
    • For legal entities, companies and associations: Extract from the commercial or association register (not older than 3 years from issue) and business registration
    • For minors: Declaration of consent from the legal guardian. If only one parent has parental authority, this must be proven by a custody order or a court judgement
    • In the case of guardianship for "official and administrative matters": Carer's identity card
    • For proxies: written power of attorney (original) as well as ID of the authorised representative (original) and ID of the principal (copy).
    • Declaration of consent from the vehicle owner that the authorised representative may be informed of the vehicle tax circumstances.
    • SEPA mandate of the vehicle owner/account holder (for purely electrically powered vehicles only required from 10 years of age)
    • eVB (electronic insurance confirmation)
    • EC Declaration of Conformity (COC) for vehicles with EC type approval
    • Registration certificate part II (previously vehicle registration document)

Due to their size, motorbikes have limited space for licence plates.

The legally prescribed size cannot be implemented here. Especially with an "E" or "H" licence plate.

    Attention:

If you want to register a motorbike online, you need a special licence plate. Arandomly selected licence plate is not technically feasible here and the allocated licence plate is too large.

If you would like to register a licence platewith the suffix "E" or "H", please contact the registration office in advance(via the contact form), as you will need a particularly short licence plate for this.

Upon application, the initial registration can also be carried out for the duration of one day only. A day registration does not require the licence plates to be stamped.

    • Electric motorbikes: For online registration, please contact the registration office in advance for a suitable licence plate. Only certain licence plates fit these vehicles. In order to be able to provide enough licence plates, these are not approved for all vehicles and must be applied for separately. You can contact us directly via the "Contact form registration office".
If you register on site, you can apply for this on the spot.
    • Electric cars: There may be space problems with particularly long licence plate combinations. The responsible clerk will be happy to help you.

Once we have prepared your registration application, the next step is to buy the licence plates. There are several private providers in the vicinity of the registration office and the citizens' offices. You will have to pay the price for the licence plates separately. These costs are not included in the fees. You must present the registration application to the manufacturer as proof of your authorisation.
You must then come back to us so that we can affix the official stickers to the licence plates and stamp them.

You have the option of reserving a licence plate of your choice.
As the City of Munich does not have enough shortened licence plates (2 letters and 3 numbers) available for everyone, cars without the suffix "E" (electric) or "H" (historic) or with a seasonal period may only be registered on normal licence plate sizes (2 letters and 4 numbers). The licence plate reservation must be made by the future holder or entered in the licence plate reservation.
A licence plate reservation is only accepted with identical holder data.

  • If a registration certificate part II (vehicle registration document) has not yet been issued for the vehicle, you must present the vehicle for identification.
  • The identification can be carried out by any German registration authority, by recognised experts, by inspectors for motor vehicle traffic or by test engineers from an officially recognised inspection organisation.
  • If a registration certificate part II (vehicle registration document) has not yet been issued for the vehicle, we also require a sales contract.
  • If a registration certificate Part II has already been issued by another registration authority, it may still be necessary to identify the vehicle in some cases. Please contact the registration authority to clarify whether this applies in your case.

Vehicle registration services and dealers can only obtain their services directly from the registration authority (not from the citizens' offices).

If you have recently moved to Munich, you can also re-register your vehicle at one of the citizens' offices at the same time as you re-register your place of residence.

Vehicles with an operating licence (e.g. light motorbikes, trailers for sports purposes, trailers for work machines) can only be registered at the vehicle registration authority.
