Registration of a dog

If you take in a new dog or move to Munich with a dog, you must register it for dog tax within two weeks.

Description

Dog tax tag or chip/transponder
When registering, you can choose whether you want to identify your dog with an existing chip/transponder or receive a dog tax tag. If your dog has been registered using a chip/transponder, you do not need to do anything else. If your dog has been allocated a tag, the tag must always be worn visibly by the dog outside your home or property.

Checks
The City of Munich can carry out inspections and obtain information to check dog ownership. If you do not register your dog, you may be subject to a warning or fine. In particularly serious cases, your offence may be punished with imprisonment or a fine.

Important note

Important note

Purpose of the dog tax
The dog tax is not used to remove dog faeces. You remain obliged to remove your pet's dirt yourself. Like other municipal taxes, the revenue from the dog tax is used to finance services and investments of the state capital for all Munich citizens.

Requirements

You must register your dog for dog tax in the following cases:

  • You have added a new dog to your household.
  • You have moved to the City of Munich with your dog.
  • The dog was born to a female dog owned by you.

Required documents

You can register your dog online or send us the completed "Registration for dog tax" form by e-mail or post. It is also possible to register in person. In either case, we need the following information:

  • Your personal details and contact information
  • Breed, litter year, colour and sex of the dog
  • Date of the start of dog ownership in Munich
  • Ownership of the dog as a first or second dog

Duration and costs

Processing time

You must register your dog within two weeks of taking it in or moving to Munich. Puppies born to a female dog you own must be registered four months after their birth.

After registration, you will receive a tax assessment notice. This notice is valid until it is amended or cancelled. Please note that it may take up to three months to receive your notice in individual cases.

Fees

The dog licence fee is 100 euros per year for each dog kept.

If you keep a fighting dog or a dog with suspected fighting dog characteristics without a negative certificate, you must pay 800 euros per year. Please note that keeping fighting dogs is subject to authorisation.

Due date: Please remember to pay the tax without being asked by 15 January each year. You will not receive a payment reminder.

Costs for keeping a dog from 1 January 2027

From 2027, the rate of dog licence tax will change.

  • It will be 144 euros per dog per year.
  • For each fighting dog, it will be 1,200 euros per year.

Please also note the new due date: in future, the dog licence fee is payable on 1 April each year.

All dog owners will receive a new dog licence tax notice at the turn of the year.

You can read about the changes to the dog licence fee rate from 2027 and the new due date of 1 April each year in the City Council resolution of 29 July 2026. To view the City Council resolution in the Council Information System
