1st place: Bitkom Smart City Index
Munich once again defends its top position in the Smart City Ranking of the digital association Bitkom.
Munich remains the frontrunner

The Smart City Index published by Germany's digital association Bitkom is considered the most important digital ranking of major German cities. Once again this year, cities with a population of over 100,000 were compared with one another.
For the third time in a row, Munich, state capital of Bavaria, took first place - and confirmed its position as the leading smart city in Germany with an overall index of 90.2, followed by Hamburg and Stuttgart.
For City Planning Councillor Elisabeth Merk from the Department of Urban Planning and Building Regulations, the renewed top position in the Smart City Index confirms that our city is developing in a digital, innovative and vibrant way.
Whether it's a virtual replica of our urban space, a new urban development plan or modern forms of citizen participation - digitalization and networking are shaping many areas of city administration today and are visibly driving Munich forward on its way to becoming a smart city.
Results by points

A team of experts from Bitkom Research collected 13,529 data points across five areas: administration; IT and communication; energy and the environment; mobility; and community and education. These five areas were divided into 37 indicators, comprising 163 parameters.
The state capital achieved the following rankings in the individual categories of the subject areas:
Administration: 93.8 points
Society and education: 96.2 points
IT and communication: 92.6 points
Mobility: 100 points
Energy and environment: 68.5 points
IT Officer Dr Laura Dornheim is delighted that Munich is once again at the top of the list, emphasising that this is only possible thanks to the hard work and passion of the many people here who are striving to make our city more liveable and sustainable.
I am particularly pleased with the high scores in the area of administrative digitization. Whether with digital citizen services, Wi-Fi in schools or forward-looking networks: My heartfelt thanks go to all the smart employees who are driving digitalization forward together!
