Dog Tax
If you own a dog in Munich, you must pay a dog tax. In certain cases, you can apply for a tax exemption.
Registering a Dog
If you are getting a new dog or moving to Munich with a dog, you must register it for dog tax within two weeks.
Costs of Owning a Dog
Starting 2027, the rate of dog license tax will change. It will then be 144 euros per dog per year. Owning a dog will cost 144 euros yearly per dog. For fighting dogs, the tax will be 1,200 euros per year.
In future, the dog tax will no longer be due in January but on April 1st each year.
All dog owners will receive a new dog tax notice at the beginning of the new year.

Loss or Damage to the Dog Tax Tag
If your dog’s tax tag has been lost or damaged, you must apply for a replacement tag.
Deregistering a Dog
If your dog has passed, you are giving it away, or you are moving out of Munich, you must deregister your dog from the dog tax program within two weeks.
Use of Revenue
The dog tax is not intended to covert the city's costs for cleaning up dog waste. You remain obliged to clean up after your pet yourself. Like other municipal taxes, the revenue from the dog tax is used to finance services and investments by the state capital for all Munich residents.
