Biocity Munich

The Biostadt Munich aims to continuously increase the proportion of organic food in out-of-home meals in the city area.

Milestones and Projects

  • In the three city canteens, the organic share is 20 percent (for meat 30 percent), at city receptions it is almost 50 percent (meat is only served in organic quality).
  • On July 28, 2021, the city council decided that by the end of 2022 a share of organic regional foods of 40 percent and by mid-2025 a share of 60 percent should be achieved in all departments and municipal institutions.

  • Daycare centers use at least 50 percent organic food for 34,000 meals.

"ZUTISCH - better eat that" is a project in which Munich restaurateurs are convinced of the use of species-appropriate meat. Because: when it comes to going out, people are sensitive to the topic of organic food.

  • Cooperation projects such as "Bio for Children" with Tollwood (Society for Cultural Events and Environmental Activities Ltd) are groundbreaking.
  • The aim of the project, which has been running for years: To show that organic is possible in childcare facilities and to advise as many facilities as possible on organic topics.
  • An important online tool: the organic menu manager, who is freely accessible and can help kitchen managers plan their own menus using organic products.

The Project "Biocity"

Under the motto "Biocity Munich", the city council resolution from 2006 instructed the department for climate and environmental protection to:

  • Create a network of projects, societies and associations as well as activities which are aimed at encouraging and using organic food.
  • Achieve increased attention for an awareness of organic diet through public relations and consumer information.
  • Support the change to an use of organic food through guidance offers.

The Biostadt Munich works with cooperation partners from the sectors of agriculture, trade, environment and sustainable nutrition, with whom a wide variety of projects could be jointly developed and implemented.
